The Mortal Man is famous for its sign, which carries an old rhyme about a pale drinker, a rosy one and the ale that made the difference. This 17th-century inn stands towards the head of Troutbeck, with a garden looking across the valley to the fells. Food and rooms are available, and it’s a well-placed stop on the walk up Wansfell or over to the Townend farmhouse nearby.
