Troutbeck is strung along a hillside lane above its valley, north of Windermere — a line of listed 17th-century statesman farmhouses with old stone wells still dotted along the road. The pick of them is Townend, a yeoman farmer’s house the National Trust keeps complete with its carved oak and everyday clutter. The Mortal Man inn has been reviving walkers here since the late 1600s.
