Townend is a low, oak-panelled farmhouse in Troutbeck that the Browne family, well-off yeoman farmers, lived in for some four hundred years — and their carved furniture, books and everyday clutter are all still in place. The National Trust keeps it as a time capsule of Lakeland farming life rather than a grand house. Admission applies and opening is seasonal, so check before you go. A genuinely characterful little place, and quieter than the big-name honeypots.
