Howick Hall was the home of the 2nd Earl Grey — the Reform Act prime minister who gave his name to the tea — and its gardens run to some sixty-five acres of woodland walks, terraces and an arboretum close to the coast. Spring brings out the rhododendrons and bulbs. You can follow a path down through the grounds to the sea and the Howick Bathing House. Seasonal opening; Alnmouth station is about 7km south.
