Low Newton-by-the-Sea is barely more than a three-sided square of whitewashed fishermen’s cottages, owned by the National Trust, opening straight onto the sand of Newton Haven. In one corner is the Ship Inn, a much-loved little pub that brews its own beer. Walk south past the reedy pool of Newton Pool reserve toward Embleton and Dunstanburgh. Chathill is the nearest station, around 6km inland.
