Barter Books
Local highlightApproximate location — this spot is pinned to the nearest village, so the exact point may be a little way off.
One of the largest secondhand bookshops in Europe, Barter Books fills Alnwick’s grand old Victorian railway station, which closed in 1968 and reopened as a bookshop in 1991. It was here that an original 1939 “Keep Calm and Carry On” poster surfaced in a box of auction books and set off the whole revival. Open fires, a model train running above the shelves and free entry make it easy to lose a couple of hours. You’ll find it just off the centre of Alnwick.
