Home to the Percy family since 1309, Alnwick Castle is the second-largest inhabited castle in England after Windsor, and its towers and battlements have doubled as Hogwarts in the early Harry Potter films. Capability Brown reshaped the surrounding parkland in the 1760s for the 1st Duke, re-routing the River Aln and raising the ground so the castle stays hidden until it bursts into view. The castle and grounds open seasonally, spring to autumn, with a paid ticket; the adjoining Alnwick Garden and Barter Books are both a short walk into Alnwick itself.
