Alnmouth sits on a narrow spit where the River Aln reaches the sea, its pastel-fronted houses backed by dunes with water on three sides. The links here were laid out in 1869 by Mungo Park, making them the fourth-oldest golf course in England. It’s an easy visit — Alnmouth station is barely 2km west on the East Coast Main Line, though the town it serves, Alnwick, is a few miles inland.
