Warkworth sits inside a tight loop of the River Coquet, a single street of stone houses climbing from the water to a dramatic ruined castle at the top — a Percy stronghold that turns up in Shakespeare’s Henry IV. Upstream, reached by a short ferry across the river, is the Warkworth Hermitage, a tiny chapel carved into the rock cliff. There’s a wide sandy beach a mile away, and Amble sits at the river mouth just south. Acklington station is about 5km inland.
