Amble is a friendly harbour town at the mouth of the River Coquet, its quayside lined with little wooden ‘harbour village’ pods selling food and crafts. Look out to Coquet Island, an RSPB reserve where puffins and terns nest in summer and boat trips run round the lighthouse (you can’t land). Warkworth, with its castle, is just up the river. Acklington station is about 5km inland.
