St Bartholomew’s was rebuilt as a collegiate church in the 1410s at the wish of Isabel de Pembrugge, and the alabaster tombs of her family and successors have earned it the nickname ‘the Westminster Abbey of the Midlands’. Look for the fan-vaulted Vernon chapel, rare in Shropshire. Outside is a grave marked for Little Nell of Dickens’s Old Curiosity Shop, actually a Victorian hoax by the parish clerk. Open to visitors; Cosford station is about 2km south.
