The Giffard family have held Chillington Hall since 1178, and the current owner still leads some of the tours himself. The house mixes two Georgian phases — a 1724 south front by Francis Smith, the rest reworked by Sir John Soane around sixty years later — set in a park and lake that Capability Brown landscaped in the 1760s. It opens to the public for a handful of days each summer, house and gardens ticketed, grounds-only cheaper. Brewood village is a couple of kilometres northeast.
