Ross Back Sands is the emptiest beach on this coast, a three-mile spit of dune and sand with no road to it — you park at Ross Farm and walk a mile or so through the dunes to reach it. The reward is total quiet, with Holy Island to the north and Bamburgh Castle to the south. Bring everything you’ll want for the day; there’s nothing out there but sea and sky.
