Bamburgh’s castle stands high on a crag of black basalt above one of England’s grandest beaches, a vast sweep of pale sand running north toward the Farne Islands. Restored by the Victorian engineer William Armstrong, it dominates the village below. Bamburgh is also the home of Grace Darling, the lighthouse-keeper’s daughter who rowed out to a shipwreck in 1838; she’s buried in the churchyard and remembered in the small RNLI museum opposite. Chathill station is about 7km south.
