St Aidan is said to have died here in 652, and a beam inside the church is traditionally the one he was resting against at the end. The present building is largely late-Norman, with one of the longest chancels of any parish church in England. In the churchyard you’ll find the grave and memorial of Grace Darling, the lighthouse keeper’s daughter who rowed out to a wreck off the Farne Islands in 1838; the Grace Darling Museum is just across the way in Bamburgh. Open access.
