Approximate location — this spot is pinned to the nearest village, so the exact point may be a little way off.

Grace Darling was the young daughter of a Farne Islands lighthouse keeper who, with her father, rowed out through a storm in 1838 to rescue survivors of the wrecked steamer Forfarshire — and became a Victorian celebrity overnight. This small RNLI museum in Bamburgh tells her story, and she’s buried across the road in the churchyard of St Aidan’s, where an ornate memorial marks the grave. Free to visit.
