St Mary’s is the parish church of Holy Island, standing right beside the red-stone ruins of Lindisfarne Priory — the monastery of Aidan and Cuthbert where the Lindisfarne Gospels were made. Parts of the church are genuinely old, back to Saxon and Norman work, though much was restored in the 19th century. Remember it lies across a tidal causeway: check the crossing times before you drive over to Holy Island.
