Open accessNational Trust land — free to wander
St Cuthbert’s Cave is a great overhang of sandstone in the wooded hills near Belford, where tradition says the monks fleeing Viking raids on Lindisfarne rested with St Cuthbert’s coffin on their long wanderings. It’s a short walk up from the National Trust car park, always open and free. A quiet, atmospheric spot, and a good leg-stretch away from the busy coast.
