Mobberley is a spread-out village of lanes, fields and old pubs between Knutsford and Wilmslow — and the birthplace of George Mallory, the Everest climber, born at Newton Hall here in 1886 when his father was rector of the parish. There’s a memorial to him in St Wilfrid’s church. It’s good, gentle walking country, with well-used field paths across to Knutsford. The village has its own station, about 1.5km to the west.
