Tatton Park, the old Egerton estate just north of Knutsford, has some of the finest historic gardens in the north-west. The star is a Japanese garden of the 1910s, complete with tea house and Shinto shrine, but there are also Italian terraces designed by Joseph Paxton, a fernery, and a huge deer park to roam. It’s run by the National Trust. Mobberley station is about 2km to the east.
