Squeezed into the Derwent gorge, Matlock Bath grew up as an inland spa and still trades on day-trippers, with amusement arcades and pleasure boats along the front and illuminations on autumn weekends. A cable car, the first alpine-style one in Britain when it opened in 1984, climbs to the Heights of Abraham woods and show caverns on the cliff above. It sits on the branch railway that runs up the Derwent from Derby.
