St Mary's Church, Wirksworth
Set into the nave wall of St Mary’s is the Wirksworth Stone, an Anglo-Saxon coffin lid carved with crowded scenes from the life of Christ, dug up beneath the chancel floor in 1820 and older than most of the church around it. The building is cathedral-like for a small town, worn and cruciform, at the heart of Wirksworth. Cromford station is about 4km to the north-east.
