Bonsall climbs steeply above the Derwent, its cottages stacked up a hillside built on centuries of lead mining. The stepped market cross at the top is the finish line for the village’s world hen-racing championship, an eccentric summer contest run from the Barley Mow. Matlock Bath station is a short walk down the hill to the east.
