Come to the Barley Mow on the first Saturday in August and you’ll find hens sprinting a thirty-foot track in the car park: the pub has hosted the World Championship Hen Racing here since 1991. The rest of the year it’s a small, cheerfully eccentric 18th-century village pub in Bonsall, which also enjoys a local reputation as a UFO hotspot. Matlock Bath station is a couple of kilometres east.
