Lovers’ Walks is a small wooded park on the east bank of the Derwent opposite Matlock Bath, laid out in the 1780s by William Emes for the industrialist Richard Arkwright and reckoned one of the oldest public pleasure grounds in the country. A stepped path called Birdcage Walk climbs the slope past the site of the old Cascades, where a thermal spring once fed the river below. It’s free to enter at any reasonable hour, over the Jubilee or New Bridge, and Matlock Bath station is right on its doorstep. The Heights of Abraham cable car rises from the opposite bank.
