Richard Arkwright built the first successful water-powered cotton spinning mill here at Cromford in 1771, the point at which factory production really began. The complex he raised over the next twenty years is now the centrepiece of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, restored by the Arkwright Society with galleries, shops and cafes. The site is free to wander; some tours and exhibitions are ticketed. Cromford station is a short walk off.
