Arkwright built Masson Mill on the Derwent at Matlock Bath in 1783, moving to the bigger river for far more water power than he had upstream at Cromford. The red-brick mill spun cotton right up to 1991 and now runs as a textile museum, with one of the largest displays of working historic machinery anywhere, alongside a shopping outlet in the old buildings. Cromford station is under a kilometre away.
