Heptonstall is a hilltop weavers’ village of dark gritstone cottages above Hebden Bridge, reached by a steep old packhorse lane. It has two churches side by side — a medieval one left ruined by an 1847 gale and its Victorian replacement — plus Sylvia Plath’s grave in the churchyard extension and an octagonal Methodist chapel of 1764 that claims to be the oldest in continuous use. Hebden Bridge station is about 2.5km down the hill.
