Up in the hilltop village of Heptonstall stand two churches sharing one graveyard. The older, St Thomas à Becket, was founded around 1260 and left a roofless shell after a gale in 1847; its Victorian successor took over alongside. In the graveyard extension to the south-west lies the poet Sylvia Plath. The churchyard is open access. Hebden Bridge station is about 2.5km downhill — a steep climb back up.
