Grosmont is the northern end of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which makes this small village a fine place to watch steam locomotives being turned and coaled before the run south to Pickering. It grew up on ironstone in the 19th century, though the works are long gone. The station is shared with the Esk Valley Line, and Goathland is a stop down the heritage line.
