Egton Bridge holds the oldest surviving gooseberry show in the country, run by the Old Gooseberry Society every August since 1800 — growers still compete to raise the heaviest berry. It’s a wooded village on the River Esk, with stepping stones across the water and Egton station a short walk to the north. Glaisdale and Grosmont are the next stops along the valley line.
