St Oswald’s stands high on the cliff above Sandsend, a landmark for miles along the coast. When the church was rebuilt in 1910 by Sir Walter Tapper, a hoard of pre-Conquest carved stones turned up in the old tower walls, marking Lythe as an important Viking-age burial ground; they’re now displayed inside. Free to visit. Whitby is about 5km down the coast, the nearest station.
