Mulgrave Woods wrap around the ruins of Old Mulgrave Castle, on the Normanby family’s estate above Sandsend, where the Phipps family have lived since 1743. The walks through the woods and out to the castle ruins are free to explore on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays (closed through May for nesting birds), though the formal gardens — including a Japanese-inspired Mount Aso garden — open only on a couple of charity days each summer. Sandsend and the Cleveland Way are both a short walk away.
