Barthomley is a tiny estate village of thatch and timber, its church and pub standing side by side. St Bertoline’s is thought to be the only church in England with that dedication, and it was the scene of a notorious Civil War massacre, when Royalist troops killed at least a dozen villagers who had sheltered in the tower. Next to it is the White Lion, a half-timbered thatched inn dated 1614. Alsager station is about 4km to the north-east.
