The two carved Saxon crosses in Sandbach’s cobbled market square are the reason to stop — a pair of 9th-century stone crosses, unusually large and covered in worn biblical scenes and beasts, reassembled here in the 19th century after being broken up long before. Around them is a pleasant old market town, still holding its Thursday market. The station is a little way out, about 1.5km to the south-east of the square.
