Sandbach Crosses
Local highlightOpen accessfree to visit at any reasonable time
Two carved Anglo-Saxon stone crosses stand in the cobbled market square at Sandbach, the larger dating from the early 9th century. They were toppled and smashed in the upheavals after the Reformation, their fragments scattered for miles, before being gathered up and re-erected here in 1816. The weathered panels still show biblical scenes and interlace. They’re right in the centre of town, free to see any time, and the station is a couple of kilometres west.
