St Bertoline’s at Barthomley is thought to be the only church in England dedicated to this obscure Saxon saint. On Christmas Eve 1643 it saw a Civil War atrocity, when around twenty Parliamentary men who had taken refuge in the tower were smoked out by Royalist troops and a dozen killed. The late-medieval church is usually open, and The White Lion sits just across the way. Alsager station is about 4km to the north-east.
