A triangular green with old cottages around it, and above them the great church of St Mary — that’s Astbury, a quiet village just outside Congleton. The church is the reason to stop: a large medieval building with a spire that stands slightly apart and a fine carved roof, well worth a look inside. Congleton station is under 3km to the east if you’re coming by train.
