Gawsworth is a hushed village of pools and old halls south of Macclesfield. The showpiece is Gawsworth Hall, a timber-framed Tudor manor still lived in and open to visitors in season, set beside a mere with the church of St James across the water — a lovely group. Opening times vary through the year, so it’s worth checking before you go. Macclesfield station is about 6km to the north-east.
