St Mary’s at Astbury is one of Cheshire’s finest churches, unusual for its tower and spire standing slightly apart from the body of the building. Inside it’s full of old woodwork — a carved rood screen and eagle lectern from around 1500, plus a 14th-century knight’s tomb. Usually open, with The Egerton Arms next to the churchyard. Congleton station is under 3km to the east.
