At around 55 metres, the giant is the largest chalk figure in Britain, and the only naked one. It was long thought Iron Age or Roman, until soil dating in 2021 placed the cutting between 700 and 1100 AD — early medieval, not ancient. The National Trust owns Giant Hill, but the figure is fenced to spare the chalk, so you see it from below. You get the clearest view from the marked viewpoint layby on the A352 just north of the village; a long lens helps. The county’s other great figure is Osmington’s white horse and rider, south towards the coast.
