Cerne Abbas is a handsome village of timbered and thatched houses along the little River Cerne, with the fragmentary remains of its Benedictine abbey at one end and the church of St Mary the Virgin beside them. On the hillside above is the Cerne Giant, the huge chalk-cut figure now thought to be early medieval rather than ancient. Three old inns keep the village busy.
