Binghams have held this Dorset manor since the 13th century, when Robert Bingham married into the Turberville family who built the first house here — the same Turbervilles thought to have given Thomas Hardy the name for his fictional d’Urbervilles. The current house was largely rebuilt around 1554, gathered round a courtyard behind ancient clipped yew hedges. Its gardens were replanted in the mid-20th century by the landscape architect Geoffrey Jellicoe. It’s a private house that doesn’t open regularly, though the Dorset Gardens Trust arranges occasional guided visits by permission of the family. Milton Abbas, the model village, is a few miles east.
