Milton Abbey’s church rises above the Dorset valley at Milton Abbas, rebuilt after a lightning strike burned the medieval church down in 1309 — though the planned nave was never actually finished. In the 1770s Joseph Damer swept away the old village to make way for a new mansion, now Milton Abbey School, and had Capability Brown landscape the park around it. The church itself is free to visit daily via a footpath from the village; the school grounds beyond, including the Park Pale of Milton Abbey, are private.
