The Thimble Inn is an 18th-century thatched pub at Piddlehinton, beside the little River Piddle north of Dorchester. Two gardens run down towards the water, and the kitchen keeps a steady country menu with well-kept local ales. A comfortable village local rather than a destination. Dorchester West station is roughly 8km south if you’re coming by train.
