The only English hill figure with a rider — King George III on horseback, cut above Weymouth in 1808.
This is the only hill figure in England to carry a rider: King George III, a regular visitor to Weymouth, shown mounted on his horse. It was cut in 1808, and shows the king riding away from the town rather than towards it. Local legend says he took offence that it faced away from Weymouth, and never came back. Inland to the north, the naked Cerne giant is the county’s other great chalk figure, in the Dorset hills.
