West Witton lines the road along the foot of Penhill, and on the Saturday nearest 24 August it holds one of the odder Dales traditions — the Burning of Bartle, when a straw effigy with glowing eyes is carried round the village to a chanted rhyme and then set alight. The Wensleydale Heifer is a well-known dining pub and inn here. Leyburn is a few miles east down the dale.
