Leyburn is the main market town of mid-Wensleydale, set on a limestone shelf with a big open marketplace and a Friday market. The Leyburn Shawl, a grassy terrace walk along the scarp above town, gives long views up the dale — legend links it to Mary, Queen of Scots’ attempted escape from nearby Bolton Castle. It makes a natural base for the eastern dale. Redmire lies west toward Castle Bolton.
