East Witton was rebuilt in one piece around 1809 by the Earl of Ailesbury, which is why its stone cottages line up so neatly along two long greens. The ruins of Jervaulx Abbey, the Cistercian house that once farmed this land, lie a couple of miles down the Ure. The Blue Lion is a well-regarded dining pub on the green. Leyburn is the nearest town, Masham a short drive south.
