Robert Lugar gave this Georgian house its castellated turrets and round tower in the 1820s, but the real draw is the parkland around it: 200 acres laid out in the 1760s for the Danby family, with a Capability Brown-influenced deer park, five lakes and follies. It’s been home to the Cunliffe-Lister family since 1882, and today the castle itself is a hotel and spa. Day visitors can buy a pass to walk the parkland and the four-acre walled kitchen garden. Masham is a couple of miles east.
